UGA's College of Public Health to host a community forum on the H1N1 and seasonal influenza viruses


In an effort to engage the Athens community as a partner in prevention, the College of Public Health is hosting a community forum regarding the current flu pandemic, the upcoming seasonal flu season, vaccination, and tips to stay healthy. The forum will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 18 in room 175 at the University of Georgia’s Paul D. Coverdell Center for Biomedical Health Sciences.

UGA researchers receive stimulus funding to improve health literacy of elderly

Improving the health literacy skills of Georgia’s elderly and disabled is the goal of a University of Georgia research project that has been funded by federal stimulus monies. UGA researchers Vicki Freimuth and Don Rubin received $970,039 through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for a two-year project that uses volunteers to help vulnerable elderly persons improve their interactions with health care providers.

UGA researcher wins stimulus funding for stem cell research that may lead to new therapies

Stephen Dalton, University of Georgia professor and Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar of Molecular Biology, has received a $600,000 federal stimulus grant to accelerate research into a type of stem cell that can turn into virtually any cell type.

ARCS Foundation Fellowships support seven UGA graduate students in the biomedical sciences

The Atlanta chapter of the ARCS® Foundation, Inc. (Achievement Rewards for College Students) awarded $45,000 in fellowships to seven outstanding American doctoral students in the biomedical and health sciences at the University of Georgia.
